Shrimp recall expands across U.S. amid radioactive contamination probe

Must read

Nearly 85,000 more bags of frozen shrimp have been recalled after FDA warnings tied to possible Cesium-137 exposure.

WASHINGTON — Nearly 85,000 more bags of frozen shrimp sold at Kroger and affiliated grocery chains have been recalled due to concerns over potential contamination with Cesium-137, a radioactive material that can increase the risk of cancer with long-term exposure.

AquaStar (USA) Corp., based in Seattle, issued the voluntary recall on Sept. 19 after the Food and Drug Administration flagged three shrimp products that may have been prepared or stored under conditions that could allow for contamination. No illnesses have been reported.

The FDA is investigating Indonesian seafood processor PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, also known as BMS Foods, after traces of Cesium-137 were detected in its shrimp shipments. The FDA says no product that tested positive for Cesium-137 has been sold in the U.S., but warned that some shrimp from this supplier may still pose a risk.

The latest recalled shrimp products include:

• Kroger Raw Colossal EZ Peel Shrimp (2 lbs) — sold in blue-topped bags with Best If Used By dates ranging from March 26 to April 24, 2027

• Kroger Mercado Cooked Medium Peeled Tail-Off Shrimp (2 lbs) — sold in green-striped packaging with Best If Used By dates between Oct. 22 and 23, 2027

• AquaStar Raw Peeled Tail-on Shrimp Skewers (1.25 lbs) — sold in printed bags with Best If Used By dates between Nov. 7 and Nov. 15, 2027

The shrimp was distributed to grocery stores in 34 states, including Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Smith’s, Food 4 Less, Mariano’s, and others under the Kroger umbrella. Affected items were sold between June 12 and Sept. 17. The states included: AK, AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, GA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MI, MO, MS, MT, NE, NM, NV, OH, OR, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, WV and WY.

Cesium-137 is a man-made radioactive isotope. The FDA warns that repeated low-dose exposure, such as through contaminated food or water, may increase the risk of cancer over time due to DNA damage.

Back in August, Walmart stores recalled packages of Great Value frozen raw shrimp sold in 13 states because of potential radioactive contamination. And more companies recalled tens of thousands of packages of imported shrimp sold at Walmart, Kroger and other U.S. stores because of the potential radioactive contamination.

Customers are advised not to eat the shrimp and instead return the product for a full refund. Questions can be directed to AquaStar at 1-800-331-3440, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT.
