Pixel Watch 4.1 update adds new icon, more M3 Expressive

Must read

Google already refreshed the Pixel Watch app on Android phones with some M3 Expressive earlier this month, but the latest update brings more tweaks and a new homescreen icon.

Previously, there was a generic representation of a watch in the four Google colors of blue, red, yellow, and green. It felt a bit busy, and wasn’t the nicest Google icon. (For comparison, the Pixel Buds companion app is quite good.)

This new icon’s drawing is much more photorealistic, and gets the curves of the case, crown, and even the band. The hour and minute hands at the center are pill-shaped and in the Material 3 style.

Old vs. new

The color palette is blue and purple, thus matching the Alarm, Timer, and Stopwatch app icon updates earlier this week. In general, Pixel apps are blue in color, and this shift from the general Google scheme feels telling from a branding perspective. The new Pixel Watch icon very much is in the family of the My Pixel app.

Meanwhile, version 4.1 of the Pixel Watch app also introduces a story-esque carousel at the top of main feed that guides you through features like Fitbit, Personal Safety, Gemini, and Wallet. It’s a good introduction, while the Material 3 Expressive stylings are fun.

The Pixel Watch app’s second-level menus have also been updated with M3 Expressive today. Each line is placed in a container for nice visual separation and grouping, with the Tiles screen also getting this treatment.

Pixel Watch 4.1 is rolling out via the Play Store.
