It aims to blend nature, neighborhoods and businesses together, focusing on sustainability.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The massive west Charlotte master-plan community known as The River District hosted its grand opening on Saturday. Structures are already going up, and neighbors are moving in.
The River District is designed to be a self-contained community, blending neighborhoods with nature and businesses while focusing on sustainability and transportation alternatives. Joe Schotts and Julia Ryan are the second residents to move in and said they’re excited for what the community around their townhome promises.
“I know they have big plans for riverfront parks,” Ryan said. “I did not want to live in a rural area, [Schotts] did, so we felt nature intertwining with the city was the perfect thing for us.”
Once completed, the community will feature more than 4,600 townhomes, commercial and retail space, a hotel, an assisted living facility, a grocery store and a school. The couple said walkability was a major draw for them.
“Everything’s going to be in one area,” Schotts said, “Which is nice, we will have everything we need within walking distance.”
Rayner Thicken is the senior managing director with Crescent Communities, which is leading The River District’s development. He hopes to see 50 residents by the end of 2025 and the community to be fully built out within eight to 10 years.
“This is a true master plan, so it’s not about just housing,” Thicken said. “It’s lifestyle, employment center, and it’s a long runway.”
