Bird flu detected in 2 Kandiyohi County turkey flocks | News

Must read

(Willmar MN-)  Bird flu has made it’s first reappearance in Kandiyohi County this fall.   On Tuesday the Minnesota Board of Animal Health confirmed Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in a commercial turkey meat bird operation in a flock of 32,900 birds in Kandiyohi County.   On Wednesday they confirmed it in two flocks in Becker County, one in an operation with 30,000 and another in a flock of 72,500.  And on Thursday it was confirmed in a flock of 40,169 in Kandiyohi County.  Bird flu is believed to be spread by migrating wild birds, and had not been seen in Minnesota since April, but on September 16th it was detected in a flock in Redwood County and there have been several other detections since.   Dr. Shauna Voss at the Minnesota Poultry Testing Lab in Willmar says there is no vaccine for avian influenza and the only defense is strict bio-security measures by poultry operations…

…Voss says the good news is since bird flu devastated poultry farmers in 2015 the industry has greatly ramped up it’s biosecurity measures.
