Ukraine’s Air Force reported that F-16 fighter jets intercepted the majority of Russian missiles launched during a large-scale overnight attack on September 20.

According to Air Force’s Telegram channel, the strikes involved both cruise missiles and drones. Ukrainian forces released video footage showing the coordinated response of surface-to-air missile systems, mobile air defense units, and F-16 pilots.

“The lion’s share of Kh-101 cruise missiles downed today were destroyed by Ukrainian Fighting Falcons,” the Air Force stated.

The Air Force confirmed that Russian forces launched a combined total of 619 aerial threats against Ukraine, including 579 Shahed-type drones, 40 missiles of various types, and ballistic projectiles.

Ukrainian defenses neutralized 552 Shahed drones, two Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles, and 29 Kh-101 cruise missiles.

Despite the interceptions, impacts and falling debris were recorded at multiple sites. Missile and drone strikes hit residential areas in Dnipro, where one person was killed and 36 were injured.

Additional casualties were reported in Khmelnytskyi region, where one person died and two were injured. Damage from strikes and debris was also confirmed in Kyiv region and Mykolaiv.

Earlier, the Ukrainian Air Force reported that a Mirage-2000 fighter jet intercepted a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile during its first recorded combat mission. According to the Air Force, the French-supplied aircraft, delivered in early 2025, engaged the target with an air-to-air missile, marking the debut of Mirage 2000-5F jets in Ukraine’s defense operations.
