Battlefield 6 is a few weeks away from release, and the dev team has expressed strong confidence in the game’s future. While speaking to PCGamesN, Jeremy Chubb, one of the producers at DICE, mentioned that the team is returning to the franchise’s roots, as the new game is much more in line with what they created in Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4.
For context, Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 remain two of the most popular entries in the series so it doesn’t come as a surprise that the community has been asking for a similar experience. While many had high expectations for Battlefield 2042, the game ended up being a major disappointment. It had countless bugs, broken features, and the gameplay didn’t deliver the proper Battlefield experience. In fact, shortly after its release, over 200,000 players requested a refund.
Even Chubb admitted during the interview that Battlefield 2042 was too ambitious, and the idea of pushing 128 players and even larger maps ended up doing more harm than good.
“I think 2042, for us, was a very ambitious goal,” said Chubb. “Trying to embrace the possibilities of 128-player and even larger-scale maps. For a lot of our audience, it didn’t quite have the right feel.”
However, with Battlefield 6, the studio is taking a different approach, as they worked closely with the community through the Battlefield Labs program to shape the game.
“This game is much more in tune with what we built in Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4, particularly,” Chubb said. “Aspects of those games come through really strong.” He further added, “There’s a confidence to us because we set up to work with the community. We have this program, Battlefield Labs. We put sometimes quite crude software in front of people, and that was a journey we all had to go on together to show in-development experiences.”
The Battlefield 6 open beta already proved to be a hit, as it reached over 500,000 peak players on Steam by the end of its first weekend. Chubb mentioned that “There’s an energy we’re getting from the audience right now which is overwhelming” and that it feels very different compared to Battlefield 2042. In any case, the game is currently scheduled to arrive on October 10, so there are only a few weeks left before you can dive into the next Battlefield adventure.
