Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is one of the highest rated games of 2025, based on critic reviews.
The RPG remake released last week, and currently commands an impressive overall score of 91 on both Metacritic and Opencritic.
According to the former, that score makes 1st Chapter the sixth highest rated title of the year, beaten only by Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Blue Prince, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Split Fiction, and Donkey Kong Bananza — in that order.
What’s more, 1st Chapter is now the highest rated game in the entire Trails series — and by some distance.
Here’s a quick breakdown based on Metacritic’s scores:
- Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter – 91
- Trails through Daybreak – 84
- Trails in the Sky the 3rd – 83
- Trails of Cold Steel 3 – 82
- Trails of Cold Steel 4 – 81
- Trails to Azure – 81
- Trails into Reverie – 81
- Trails from Zero – 80
- Trails in the Sky SC – 80
- Trails of Cold Steel 2 – 80
- Trails in the Sky – 79
- Trails of Cold Steel – 77
- Trails through Daybreak 2 – 76
Japanese developer Falcom has really outdone itself, then, but there is a caveat to all of this. Generally speaking, only a handful of outlets tend to review Trails games, and less reviews usually means that average scores end up being higher.
Indeed, at the time of writing, 1st Chapter’s excellent score of 91 is pulled from just 11 critic reviews on Metacritic, and 19 critic reviews on Opencritic.
Still, it’s clear that 1st Chapter has really hit home with fans of Falcom’s series — and JRPGs in general. The user reviews on Steam, for example, are ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ right now.
For what it’s worth, we think the game’s fully deserving of such praise. In our Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter PS5 review, we called it a “must-play instalment”, and awarded it a 9/10.
